The permanent collection at Agnes Scott College began with the opening of the Dana Fine Arts Building in 1965. Since then, it has grown significantly through acquisitions and generous donations, including Asian art, Japanese woodblock prints, and works by renowned contemporary artists. The collection features works by international artists, Georgia artists, and pieces by alums and current students.
When installing artworks on campus, priority is placed on their relevance to Agnes Scott College’s educational mission. The location of the artwork is often decided by level of accessibility so that members of the campus community and visiting public are able to easily see the work. This means placing artworks in common, shared spaces. The McCain Library hosts a large proportion of the college’s collection as the conditions for keeping books and art safe are comparable. Due to the nature of libraries, McCain is a good place for the viewing and contemplation of works compared to other high-traffic buildings on campus.
