What is the difference between a scholarly journal, an academic journal, and a peer-reviewed journal?

There is little difference between these terms. Each describes a publication that contains original research articles conducted by experts in their field. Prior to publication, articles within these publications undergo a “peer-review” process, in which other experts on the topic anonymously evaluate and provide feedback on the article to determine if the quality of the article is acceptable.

 

Faculty and librarians frequently use these terms interchangeably to describe the type of literature students should use to inform and support their arguments.
