From the results page of Discover GALILEO, what options are available to narrow my search?
From the results page, there are 14 filters that will help users narrow their search results:
McCain Library’s favorite filters are:
- “Source Type” or “Peer Reviewed”—The “Source Type” filter allows users to narrow the results to academic journals, ebooks, and other types of publications. The “Peer Reviewed” filter narrows the results to articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals.
- “Publication Date” -- The “Publication Date” filter allows users to narrow a search to works published in the last 5 - 10 years or to a specific date range. Note that the option to narrow a search by a custom date range is only available in the search filters that appear after a search has been initiated.
- “Language” -- The “Language” filter benefits individuals who can only read in a few languages. It allows the user to select the languages they can read and eliminate any articles in the search results written in other languages.
- “Subject” -- The “Subject” filter identifies the most prominent subject terms associated with items in the search. Browse through the list of terms to identify relevant concepts to narrow the focus of the search.
- “Full text” -- The “Full text” filter will limit the list of articles to those immediately accessible through Discover or one of McCain Library’s other databases. Users, however, are cautioned to use this filter only when they are in a hurry to access the full text of a work. Nearly all the works found in Discover are accessible for free through McCain Library’s Interlibrary Loan service and usually come within three days or less.
Other filters available that McCain Library recommends to advanced users are:
- “Content Provider”
- “Limit by Journal”
- “Geography”
The filters that McCain’s librarians rarely use or recommend are:
- “Available in library collection”
- “Bibliography” “Catalog Only”
- “Georgia Digital Collection Only”
- “Lexile Range”
- “Publisher”
To learn more about these additional filters, set up a research appointment with a librarian.
